The principle ‘Ignorance of Law is no excuse’ implies that all of us are well aware of the laws prevalent in our country. It means 'Ignorance of law' cannot be pleaded as defense in any court of law. Hence, it is essential for all individuals who are involved in business activities to possess the basic knowledge of laws relevant to run their business operations. The students of commerce and management discipline are prospective business executives. They are expected to know the legal environment of a business, and hence we find the subject of ‘Mercantile Law' in the curriculum of Commerce and Management courses of all universities in the country.
